The idea for Allstate Insurance Company came during a bridge game on a commuter train in 1930, when insurance broker Carl L. Odell proposed to Wood, his neighbor, the idea of selling auto insurance by direct mail. The idea appealed to Wood, and he passed the proposal to the Sears board of directors, which approved it. Allstate Insurance Company, named after Sears’ tire brand, went into business on April 17, 1931, offering auto insurance by direct mail and through the Sears catalog.[9] This was in line with one of the objectives of a company to sell automobile insurance in the same manner as Sears sold its merchandise.[10]
Allstate has stated intentions of reducing its exposure in hurricane-prone Florida. In November 2006, Allstate did not renew 120,000 policies that were expiring at that time. Governor Charlie Crist and the Florida Cabinet passed a 90-day emergency order to temporarily prevent insurance companies from nonrenewing policies.[40] On February 20, 2007, Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty clarified the order, stating that insurance companies can nonrenew policies if they satisfy certain conditions, including filing new, lower rates with the state and give customers 100 days’ notice.[41]
I just recently switched to The General insurance because after researching I found that they had pretty much all the same coverage I had with my previous car insurance but for a much lower price. So far they've been pretty decent although their customer service isn't all that great at least for me. I love the low price as it saves me a ton of money. I'm hoping switching to them is worth saving a… read more
Geico, USAA, Progressive and Esurance offered the cheapest rates in our comparison. Mercury, a regional company available in 11 states, was also one of the cheapest in California. Finding the most affordable car insurance depends on the car your drive, your driving record and other factors, so your own quotes will vary. If you’re looking for cheap insurance, you could start by getting quotes from these companies.

Customers have also been quick to note that when they needed The General to come through, it either failed to do so or provided an insufficient and unsatisfactory resolution. For repairs, this means you may not get the amount you need — several people report sending over bills from repair shops only to receive compensation that was less than half the actual cost. Refunds for contested fees were also hard to come by, even if there was no history of driving violations or accidents.

I currently have a policy with The General because I have had accidents in the past and have found that my monthly premiums are much cheaper than with other companies. The only issue I have had with this company was trying to prove that one accident was a "not at fault" accident. It took quite some time to get the required paperwork to prove this because when a new policy begins, all accidents are seen… read more
When comparing car insurance quotes, it helps to compare apples to apples; in other words, you want to be sure that the quotes you get are for identical - or at least very similar - auto insurance policies. Once you have a better idea of the type of coverage you’re looking for in a policy, this will be easy. To better understand coverage types start here
Our overall star rating for The General car insurance is 3 out of 5. That number falls in the center of the scale, but here’s what it means for you: The General is great for certain drivers. What came to light in our research is that The General targets a certain segment of the auto insurance market: high-risk drivers, or those who have multiple moving violations, including DUIS, or accident claims. We researched the company from top to bottom and have the full breakdown for you here.
The counties impacted are Angelina, Aransas, Atascosa, Austin, Bastrop, Bee, Bexar, Brazoria, Brazos, Burleson, Caldwell, Calhoun, Cameron, Chambers, Colorado, Comal, DeWitt, Fayette, Fort Bend, Galveston, Goliad, Gonzales, Grimes, Guadalupe, Hardin, Harris, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson, Jim Wells, Karnes, Kerr, Kleberg, Lavaca, Lee, Leon, Liberty, Live Oak, Madison, Matagorda, Milam, Montgomery, Newton, Nueces, Orange, Polk, Refugio, Sabine, San Augustine, San Jacinto, San Patricio, Trinity, Tyler, Victoria, Walker, Waller, Washington, Wharton, Willacy and Wilson.
Your standard Safeco Car Insurance policy provides essential liability protection and other coverages required by law. It includes coverage if your car is involved in an accident while being driven by you or someone else. To enhance your policy with extra protection for damage, emergencies, repairs, and personal property, you can choose additional coverage options. Your local independent agent can offer personal advice about product availability in your area and how much coverage is right for you.
This supplemental option provides protection for any custom parts you may have installed in your vehicle, like grilles, stereo systems, paint jobs, or spoilers. If you elect to purchase this coverage, The General will pay for the cost of replacing these parts after an accident (which aren’t usually included under a standard insurance policy). That said, The General does have a limit on custom equipment coverage: In California, the limit is $1,500, and in every other state, it’s $5,000.
Travelers Insurance offers the most comprehensive coverage of any auto insurance provider we saw. It has options for accident forgiveness, GAP insurance, and special coverage for drivers employed by rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft. And while The General might give you a lower base quote, Travelers’ long list of discounts could erase that gap quickly.
Businesses require special types of insurance policies that insure against specific types of risks faced by the particular business. For example, a fast food restaurant needs a policy that covers damage or injury that occurs as a result of cooking with a deep fryer. An auto dealer is not subject to this type of risk but does require coverage for damage or injury that could occur during test drives. There are also insurance policies available for very specific needs, such as kidnap and ransom (K&R), medical malpractice, and professional liability insurance, also known as errors and omissions insurance.
The biggest downside to Erie is that it is only available in Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. As well, Erie still relies strongly on its agent network; which isn't always a bad thing. A strong agent network is usually key to ensuring a smooth claims process. If you want to quickly buy car insurance without speaking to anyone though, Erie may not be the company for you. While you can start the process online, you ultimately will have to speak with an agent to finalize your quote. Erie will be ideal for any customers within its market, who do not mind putting in some extra effort to get quality and cheap auto insurance.

They put me in debt over $190, I'm only 20 years old. Had the insurance for less than a month, they were so nice when they were receiving my card number of course. But once I canceled to move onto a BETTER company they were no longer helpful, said I owed more money when it was paid and they sent what I refused to pay to collections. Of course the lady heard nasty words from me because she was honestly a **. To keep it real they screwed me over entirely. They are good with fraud, real expensive, and have no locations unless you’re in Kentucky I believe. So my opinion, they are trash. Everyone who works for them that I have experienced is rude as hell. They don’t care about anything about you besides the money you’re forking over. So I suggest you NOT consider them at any point. Disgusting company that should definitely not even exist. Thanks for reading.
24/7 Roadside Assistance: If you want roadside services, such as tire changes, battery replenishment, fluid delivery (gas, oil, etc.) or towing, you’ll want to purchase this optional coverage. The General’s roadside assistance is administered by Nation Safe Drivers (NSD). When you request roadside assistance, NSD will administer up to one service free of charge per instance. The towing service has a maximum benefit of 15 miles or $50, whichever is reached first. To request roadside assistance, The General’s customers can dial 1-800-338-2680.
What changes between each state’s auto insurance requirements is how much of each type of coverage is needed. Both bodily injury and property damage liability coverage is required in almost every state, and some states require personal injury protection and uninsured motorist coverage as well. Each state also has its own minimum liability limits, presented as bodily injury limit for a single person, bodily injury limit on the entire accident, and property damage limit.
For the minimum required coverage in Colorado, be prepared to pay a mean of $647 annually. This is cheaper than the nationwide average by 2%. If you opt for better car insurance coverage, you can select a policy with comprehensive and collision coverage, insuring against the costs of auto collisions, theft, or weather incidents. It's worth noting that better coverage comes at a cost: in Colorado, a comprehensive policy with a $1,000 deductible costs $1,273, 97% more than basic insurance coverage. For comprehensive coverage with a $500 deductible, expect to pay 122% more than you might for a basic liability-only policy.

"After being with my insurance company for just shy of 10 years, and after having shopped at companies that everyone around my hometown swore were the cheapest (including unadvertised "bargain" companies and giant comparison shopping brands), I decided to shop here at Cheap Car Insurance and ended up saving just under $1,100 off my annual insurance bill, which is a lot more than I ever could have imagined anyone saving, especially me, an avid online shopper and extreme bargain hunter [...]
