We identified the auto insurance companies with the cheapest rates, but, as with anything, you want to be sure you are getting high quality service from your insurance company. Reliable car insurance companies are critical in ensuring a smooth customer-insurer relationship. There are a few factors we deemed most important to evaluate a company on which affect policy holders' satisfaction, such as, the average shopping experience, customer service, ability to resolve complaints, and quote filing process.
Young drivers — aged between 16 and 25 — pay very high car insurance rates, with those aged 16-19 paying the most expensive premiums of all. Because of the risk presented by inexperienced drivers, teen drivers pay more than three times the national average for car insurance. In Texas, teen drivers pay especially high rates: $7,096 per year — more than $2,000 more than the nationwide average and almost four times as much as a typical Texas driver.
The General is intended for drivers who may face steep rates from other insurers, but that doesn’t mean it will be able to provide those drivers with the protection they need. Few coverage options and a history of complicated claims resolution keeps us from recommending The General. Even if it offers lower rates than the competition, you might eventually get hit with unexpected fees that drive up the price of your coverage. If you can avoid it, you should — there are better insurance options out there.
Drivers should be wary not to confuse The General’s favorable rates for high-risk drivers to mean that they won’t suffer from rate increases in the event of an accident. In fact, based on the companies in our sample, The General awarded the largest rate increase after an accident. While The General’s auto insurance rates were still the lowest among the companies sampled, drivers aren’t immune from large rate increases.
It might be a fairly obvious suggestion, but if you're already struggling to pay for car insurance you really need to take care while driving. If you're cautioned for speeding or file an at-fault claim, you'll be rated (or charged) for 3 years in most states. What's more, if you have a good driving discount, you will lose that and be ineligible for it until the citation or claim falls of your insurance record. All the more reason to drive safely. Below are some national averages for citations.

Although insurance companies do their own internal customer service and claims satisfaction surveys, it is notable that consumers are able to post their own independent reviews on various websites or even Google for local companies. These reviews should also be referenced when looking at an insurance choice. It is also helpful to view independent studies that take a snapshot of what the generalized impressions are of insurance companies across a variety of areas. One example of independent study is the series of reviews and ratings by JD Power.

The General, unlike most companies focusing on selling nonstandard auto insurance, has a mobile app and an online portal to make managing your policy easier. The General’s online portal, MyPolicy, provides users with basic functionalities like the ability to make payments, receive ID cards and view policy details. While none of the features are unique, they provide high-risk drivers with the same benefits that standard drivers have access to through large national insurance companies, like State Farm and Farmers.
In this general overview of the overall customer experience in insurance shopping, Allstate offers a standard shopping experience, as seen in the J.D. Power Insurance Shopping Study (2016). It is noteworthy that the experience in a few of these categories is lead by the local agent, so the ratings would be based on the individual experiences by region. Although it is interesting to see how Allstate compares to the rest of the companies overall, I think a reaction to this kind of review has to be based on more of the consistency across markets, and I would balance this against reviews of your own local agent on other review sites like Google that can specify results on the actual agent you may be dealing with.
You may have heard that men pay more than women for car insurance. This is true, because statistically men are more likely to engage in risky driving practices like speeding and driving under the influence, which results in more accidents. Massachusetts, Hawaii, and North Carolina do not allow gender to play a role in auto insurance rates, so drivers in those states don’t have to worry.
Insurance contracts are governed by the principle of utmost good faith (uberrima fides) which requires both parties of the insurance contract to deal in good faith and in particular it imparts on the insured a duty to disclose all material facts which relate to the risk to be covered.[12] This contrasts with the legal doctrine that covers most other types of contracts, caveat emptor (let the buyer beware). In the United States, the insured can sue an insurer in tort for acting in bad faith.

If you rent instead of own, a renters insurance policy is just as important. Your belongings inside the dwelling can add up to a significant amount of money. In the event of a burglary, fire or disaster you should be able to at least have a policy that can cover most of the replacement costs. Both homeowners and renter's insurance can also protect you against personal liability if someone is injured at your home.

This is by far the lowest Car insurance I have found. I was only looking for state minimum coverage and wanted to spend as little as possible. After requesting quotes from many insurance companies, I was so happy to find The General. The entire process can be done online and was so easy. I would definitely recommend this company to anyone looking to save some money. They even give you the option to pay for… read more

If you have a clean driving record — no at-fault accidents, speeding tickets, DUIs, or other recent citations — you'll probably pay less for car insurance. Conversely, a bad driving record will cause your rates to skyrocket: car insurance premiums typically increase by 29% after a DUI, 33% after an at-fault accident, and 15% after a speeding ticket in Virginia. The post-citation penalties assessed by car insurance companies after speeding tickets and at-fault accidents in Virginia align with nationwide averages, but drivers receive lower-than-average rate hikes after DUI violations. If you have a clean driving record, be sure to check for good-driving discounts from your insurer.

I had gotten The General Insurance because it was cheaper! Big mistake! I was recently in an accident and when I claimed it nothing was wrong and they processed the claim! A week later after they had gotten the police report and had done the estimate we were told it was being processed and someone would be in contact! Not only did I have to call the person handling the claim numerous time to find out any information on it I had to call after I had not heard anything from the about the claim. I was then told that our insurance lapsed the day of the accident. I paid every month on the same date the 27th.
The company’s ability to meet customer claims doesn’t translate to a smooth and painless claims experience. In fact, the company has a complaint rating of 2.12 from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), compared to the national median of 1.00. The rating signifies that The General has a disproportionate number of negative ratings. Furthermore, an overwhelming number of reviews cite constant rate increases and slow claims processing.

My husband and I had The General Insurance from 2009-2010, and--overall--we were pleased with the service/product. The application process online was not time-consuming. Applying for and purchasing a policy was as stress-free as we've ever had it, with regards to auto insurance. (This was mainly due to the fact that The General's website did our "legwork" and research for us--so we didn't have to)! Once our application process was complete, my husband and I were… read more
Allstate has stated intentions of reducing its exposure in hurricane-prone Florida. In November 2006, Allstate did not renew 120,000 policies that were expiring at that time. Governor Charlie Crist and the Florida Cabinet passed a 90-day emergency order to temporarily prevent insurance companies from nonrenewing policies.[40] On February 20, 2007, Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty clarified the order, stating that insurance companies can nonrenew policies if they satisfy certain conditions, including filing new, lower rates with the state and give customers 100 days’ notice.[41]
