Other pros of Progressive include it being an online company. You can get a quote directly from the Progressive website without having to speak to an agent. Cons of Progressive involve its customer service. Customers in the J.D. Power survey only gave mediocre remarks for Progressive for its buying experience and claims handling process. It isn't the worst, but Progressive is far from the best in the field. Because of this, Progressive might be the best insurer ideally for customers prioritizing low rates, especially after an accident, and do not mind a bit more cumbersome claims handling process.

If your car is not insured and involved in an accident, you might have to pay to rent a car or cover repairs yourself. Comprehensive and Collision coverage as part of your car insurance policy is a much better value because, even if you're not involved in an accident, you can still be protected against theft, fire, vandalism and windshield damage. Like with all auto insurers, the quality of claims handling actually varies depending where in the U.S. you live. According to J.D. Power, Allstate's claims handling is above average in New England, and superb in Texas. It is below average however in the midwest and southeast. If you live in those areas, Allstate, compounded with its expensive price tag, doesn't make quite a compelling argument.

Overall, Allstate offers a vast range of products. Their insurance experience may vary and be based on the strength and service skills of the local agents and claims response team, but the company itself is solid financially as we reviewed in the financial strength ratings above. Allstate has been around through several recessions and has seen a large share of claims. Allstate has evolved with consumer needs to offer increasing product lines and to offer digital customer service experiences. Allstate involves itself in the community.

While State Farm's shopping experience is well-reviewed, customers did not feel as strongly about it's claims handling process. The company scored about the same as the other four large companies, but was still mediocre. A large national company may be expected to not be very efficient because of the various departments involved in handling individual claims. If you want the assurances guaranteed to you by a large, "legacy" carrier, then State Farm is the best to go with.
I had a policy for a year, at renewal time they increased my rates $10 per month for no reason. I had no accidents nor tickets. I researched other insurance options and found out I was paying way too much! I ended up getting a policy at Nationwide with a little better coverage, including roadside assistance for less than half than what I was paying on my original policy with The General! I was amazed. Then I felt dumb that when I originally bought The General policy I used one of those sites that supposedly check all sites for the best rates, but actually it only checks the 4-5 that pay to be on the site. Live and learn, and now I pay a whole lot less!

In the various reviews and ratings, Allstate did not win any of J.D. Power's awards. However, when we look at the claims ratings, they certainly ranked higher than their overall shopping experience. In some cases, an insurance company shopping experience may not be as slick, but I would put more weight on the customer satisfaction on claims settlement and handling since this is where an insurance company has to be able to deliver its top service. If you are thrilled with the shopping experience, but then get thoroughly disappointed in a claim, the value is not really there.

Drivers who are “high risk” often find it difficult to get car insurance. Whether they have poor credit, bad driving records (or both), these customers are expensive for companies to insure. You get what you pay for. Super cheap rates at an exchange for meticore service. If you've had trouble in the past due to several claims chances are The General will get you covered at a lower price than leading insurance companies. 6 weeks ago my vehicle was hit by a person being insured by The General Insurance company. To this day 6 weeks later I'm still waiting to hear from someone from the claims department to get back with me on my insurance check. The entire process has been extremely slow and drawn out. Very very disappointed in the amount of time that it takes to process a total loss claim. Several times I was told, "We will get back with you," in a certain amount of time and never hear from them. If I would have had to rent a car due to the loss of my vehicle I would have went broke by now! Definitely would not recommend them to anyone. I have the same exact type of accident happened 3 months ago and the insurer was insured by another company in which was taken care of from start to finish in 9 days. Big difference! For most people...I would say you are messing around with our livelihood!
